Mining DOE Contracts - Pt.1

This is part of an ongoing project to develop data mining tools for analyzing contracts between federal agencies and private contractors. These tools are intended to help in research efforts to identify interesting new technological developments, infrastructure projects such as energy or transportation projects, among other research focused applications. This post will cover an example of the output from mining federal contrast between the U.S. Department of Energy and prime contractors. Please note that these tools are in progress and may still have bugs to work out, so any information presented here should be verified. The source data is publicly available at USASpending.gov, which I will link to bellow.

Total Federal Action Obligations by Recipient

Here we are visualizing the top recipients of federal contracts from the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) based on the most recent 2023 award allocation dataset from USASpending.gov. This analysis looks at contractors across all NAICS categories and calculates to total amount of federal dollars obligated for all contracts awarded to a contractor. The data frame was filtered down to recipients whose total federal dollars obligated (FDO) represent 2%+ of the sum of FDO across all DOE contracts. The filtered data frame was then sorted to show the recipients in descending order by FDO and colorized with a continuous color scale from Plotly's "sunset" pallet.

For better readability of  the top award recipients, the names and logos of the top recipients are listed for in the order they appear in the chart. National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, better known as Sandia National Laboratories is the largest award recipient of DOE funding as measured by summing the total amount of funding under the Federal Action Obligation category. Sandia National Laboratories is well known for its expertise in nuclear technologies and handles a wide range of scientific and engineering projects. Unsurprisingly, most of the companies/organizations listed focus on technological development for matters of national security.

Project Locations

This map show the location of DOE projects in the FY2023 contract award dataset. Award data is aggregated geographically and pooled with the nearest core base statistical area. It is important to note that some projects do not have a physical location associated with the contract and therefore do not appear in this map. For example, the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC (Sandia National Laboratories) is the largest recipient of DOE funding as shown in the graph above, but those projects do not appear in this map because they do not have a primary place of performance listed.
