Uber Speed Maps
This project was part of a personal exercise to learn more about data analysis and visualization with Python and D3.At the time, I was living in San Francisco for my job at SFO and my exposure to what goes on behind the scenes airports expanded my interests in transportation. The work of Uber's data visualization team was one of the catalysts for my interest in data science and visualization, so when Uber launched Uber Movement, I was excited to use trip data to make visualizations of my own.
My objective was to use publicly available ride-share data from ubermovement.com to generate speed heat-maps of the Bay Area.Uber movement provides ride time data for major cities and speed maps for select cities, but for this exercise I wanted to work only with ride time data and see if I could figure out how to estimate the speed vehicles moved at different points in their journey.
At the time, I was fairly new to programming so the computational sophistication was not very impressive and if I were to rework this project today, I would go about the process differently.
